A Rookie’s Guide to Hiking

A few days ago I did my first big hike of the season. The last time I did the Syncline Loop turned out to be a very…er… interesting experience (you can read about that fateful day here, if you haven’t already). Although I thoroughly enjoyed the part of the hike I spent on my own, I felt a little cheated on the second half and decided to give it another swing. Continue reading “A Rookie’s Guide to Hiking”

The Park Service Paperwork Blues

Well, a lot has happened since I’ve last written. I was waiting for everything to become official before I posted it here, but at this point I’m wondering if that is ever going to happen. And seeing as I have internet access today for the first time in quite a while, I might as well take advantage of it right? Continue reading “The Park Service Paperwork Blues”

The Things Kids Say

3/27/11 – 9:02am

Still sitting in the living room at Canyonlands. Still waiting for the sun to do it’s job. Still reflecting on my time in Summit County. There is one post I always wanted to write, but never got around to, and that is one documenting all the funny things my kids have said. I probably can’t even remember a quarter of them. I can’t think of a single day that something hilarious was said that I should have written down. But here are some that I can remember: Continue reading “The Things Kids Say”

Catching Up

3/27/11 – 8:51am

I wouldn’t feel right delving into my newest adventures without writing at least once more about my time in the mountains. I truly wish I had written more there, but as wonderful as it was everything about my job was so exhausting that I had little energy to write at the end of my days. There are things that I’ll miss and things that I won’t. Here’s a list of both: Continue reading “Catching Up”

Back to the Canyonlands

NOTE: The next few posts were written a few days ago when I was without internet. Sorry in advance for those of you who get these posts via email and are about to be bombarded.

3/27/11 – 8:15am

Horrah! I am back at Canyonlands! Words cannot describe how good it feels. This morning as soon as I woke up I ran to the window to soak in my first look. And there she was, exactly as I had remembered, greeting me with another glorious day. It even smells the same. Oh happy day! Continue reading “Back to the Canyonlands”

Dreaming of Spring…

It is the eve of my three-day, Professional Ski Instructors of America certifying exam. While I should be concerned with the movement analysis of bend, twist and edge; while my mind should be preoccupied with the definitions of flexion, extension, rotary and edging – tonight,  I find myself distracted Continue reading “Dreaming of Spring…”

Looking Forward

Well, I’m just over half-way through my stay here in the mountains, and I’ve been sending out a LOT of applications in hopes of some solidarity in employment for the months beyond April. Obviously my first choice would be to go back and work for the Park Service, but I am also really missing Moab, and have put out a few applications for rafting guide jobs in that area. My last resort at this point, I think, would be to try and get a job in a shop or restaurant in Moab. But I rather be doing something relevant to the careers I’m considering, so I’d like to stay in the area of guiding/rangering. But I guess it will all depend on the choices I end up with.
