Well, I did it.

Two days ago I was offered a job as a GS-05 grade interpretative ranger at Mesa Verde National Park. And I took it.

This feels like it was a long time coming – months and months of filling out applications and making phonecalls. I’m still waiting to hear from some other places, but it feels good to know that I have something to look forward to and to be excited about for sure.

Mesa Verde is a very, very cool place. I visited it several times this summer while I was at Canyonlands (one visit documented in my blog post entitled, quite creatively, ‘Mesa Verde’). It’s very unique as far as National Parks go, as it’s main resource is cultural rather than natural. The site has been deemed so significant to human heritage that it is not only a National Park but also a World Heritage site. In my job there I will give tours of the cliff-dwellings only open to visitors accompanied by a ranger, and yes, I will get to wear a flat hat and badge.

I’m feeling really good at the moment. And more positive than ever that when you put good things out into the world, you’ll get good things back. So sometimes you have to put 50+ good things out into the world… but it pays off in the end. That’s the power of perseverance.

My mom and I at the entrance to Mesa Verde when we visited last September. Foreshadowing anyone?
