Since moving out west, I have learned the true meaning of a starry night (see my older post on stars here). These days, I have the advantage of living at the bottom of a high-placed canyon (elevation of about 8000 ft), and a large window with a bed pushed right up to it. This wasn’t actually my choice, as that’s where the bed was sitting when I arrived and the frame was so old and rickety I couldn’t move it, but an advantage to this is a pretty incredible view of the sky as I fall asleep. Fall and Winter
At the end of last summer I posted a short video with pictures set to music of my summer. I explained how making a commemorative slideshow at the end of each season is a little tradition I’ve had with myself since college. To see that post, click here.
I got lazy last fall and winter. But as lately I’ve found myself without television and internet and therefore much more time, I decided to combine the two seasons and keep my own tradition alive.
Enjoy.

This post is a long time coming. Seriously, I’ve been meaning to write it forever. The words have been in my head so long, I have no idea how to start. Continue reading “Desert Flowers”
A Rookie’s Guide to Hiking
A few days ago I did my first big hike of the season. The last time I did the Syncline Loop turned out to be a very…er… interesting experience (you can read about that fateful day here, if you haven’t already). Although I thoroughly enjoyed the part of the hike I spent on my own, I felt a little cheated on the second half and decided to give it another swing. Continue reading “A Rookie’s Guide to Hiking”
The Park Service Paperwork Blues
Well, a lot has happened since I’ve last written. I was waiting for everything to become official before I posted it here, but at this point I’m wondering if that is ever going to happen. And seeing as I have internet access today for the first time in quite a while, I might as well take advantage of it right? Continue reading “The Park Service Paperwork Blues”
Back to the Canyonlands
NOTE: The next few posts were written a few days ago when I was without internet. Sorry in advance for those of you who get these posts via email and are about to be bombarded.
3/27/11 – 8:15am
Horrah! I am back at Canyonlands! Words cannot describe how good it feels. This morning as soon as I woke up I ran to the window to soak in my first look. And there she was, exactly as I had remembered, greeting me with another glorious day. It even smells the same. Oh happy day! Continue reading “Back to the Canyonlands”
Dreaming of Spring…
It is the eve of my three-day, Professional Ski Instructors of America certifying exam. While I should be concerned with the movement analysis of bend, twist and edge; while my mind should be preoccupied with the definitions of flexion, extension, rotary and edging – tonight, I find myself distracted Continue reading “Dreaming of Spring…”
How to Grow
In my old life, these first few days of the new year would have been especially frustrating. For one, the transition from the holidays to regular-old-winter-cold is usually a pretty depressing one for me, and I loathe the chores that come with undecorating. It’s a bit of a psychological punch in the gut if you ask me – just a tedious task that serves as a reminder that some of the most magical times of the year are over. Continue reading “How to Grow”
On to the next
Well, it’s happened.
My room is an explosion of belongings (most of which I have no idea what to do with), my spider-roommates are quite upset with all the commotion (and coming out in the masses to tell me so), I am procrastinating (hence this lovely blog post), and mostly just relieved that I have yet to unearth a scorpion in this cluttered mess (this is somewhat of an impractical fear, as it is bound to happen eventually).
It’s almost time to move on. Continue reading “On to the next”
