In Honor of Black History Month

I love my job. But it’s easy to feel discouraged, frustrated, and downright neglected from the powers that be and the community I strive to serve. Videos like this remind me how worthwhile it all is and make my heart happy. Watch it. By the end I bet it will make your heart happy too.

Denver

Hallelujah!

The snow gods have been blessing us hugely in the past 3 days which has made for some amazing conditions I just couldn’t stay inside for. And guess what, I’m feeling a semblance of my old self again! There’s still pain but with a little help from my good friend ibuprofin (doses of 800 thanks to my Spanish leftovers) I am not only skiing again but skiing well! After months of disappointment, this feels good, and this all couldn’t come soon enough since I leave for Canyonlands in less than a week! Continue reading “Denver”

Where I’m Going

Writing in front of the fire on this chilly Colorado evening makes me happy it’s winter. And since I’m generally a warm weather girl, that is a very good thing. Continue reading “Where I’m Going”

Joy in 2012

Happy New Year single reader!

It’s a beautiful, blue sky day here in summit county. But since yesterday’s blizzard came with winds so high they whipped the snow off the mountain before it could reach the ground, we’re still sorely lacking suitable ski conditions – which is probably for the better as I continue to heal. So rather than spending the first day of the year on the slopes as I have for so many winters past, I’m spending it at home for a little R&R and some quiet contemplation. 162 Miles to Santiago

162 Miles to Santiago

I didn´t walk as far as I wanted to today. I couldn´t. Not because of pain, which is good and I am happy for. But because I was not in the right mindset. Continue reading “162 Miles to Santiago”

My Camino

San Sebastian

Well, I went to the doctor yesterday and it was exactly what I feared – achilles tendinitis. He said no walking at all for 2-4 days and suggested I take a bus to Santiago. Between my bad spanish and his bad english I was pretty sure he was telling me my camino was over. Yesterday was filled with lots of tears. I felt totally hopeless. But friends and family and lots of total strangers came together and lifted me up and now I am resting at a family friend´s house on a balcony overlooking beautiful San Sebastian with my feet up and iced and the sweetest dog I´ve ever met at my side. It´s a long story how I got here but the important thing is that I´m okay and feeling much better. Continue reading “My Camino”

Happy Birthday Ita!

Okay, I’ll admit, it’s actually the 19th as a write this message. But as I will hopefully be on my first day walking the Camino and most likely unable to communicate directly with her, I thought I’d take advantage of the ‘schedule future post’ feature on this blog to say a little something about one of the most special people I know. Continue reading “Happy Birthday Ita!”

Camino Incentives

It was the day after Thanksgiving that I moved to Colorado last year. I rode the Colorado Mountain Express from Denver International Airport to the Frisco Transportation Center that evening, full of excitement for the big move and my first season as a ski instructor. On the CME with me was a jovial driver who had spent the off-season walking the Camino de Santiago, and a member of the U.S. paralympic ski team. The man was in a wheelchair, but needed no help loading his luggage in the van, or climbing into the front seat. He was an athlete in every way, and had done more amazing things in his lifetime than I could even dream about. But when our driver started speaking of his time on the Camino, the man grew silent. The driver and I spent the better part of the drive in an animated discussion about the trip, and it wasn’t until the twinkling lights of Summit County came into view that the man spoke again. Starlight, Star Bright Pt 2

Since moving out west, I have learned the true meaning of a starry night (see my older post on stars here). These days, I have the advantage of living at the bottom of a high-placed canyon (elevation of about 8000 ft), and a large window with a bed pushed right up to it. This wasn’t actually my choice, as that’s where the bed was sitting when I arrived and the frame was so old and rickety I couldn’t move it, but an advantage to this is a pretty incredible view of the sky as I fall asleep. Walk in Beauty, A Navajo Prayer

I recently stumbled upon this prayer next to a drawing at the Cortez Cultural Center. I feel it encompasses everything I’ve learned to value in the past year. Enjoy. Continue reading “Walk in Beauty, A Navajo Prayer”
