My first week in the Dominican Republic wrapped up just days ago and already it seems like only a blur of vivid colors and sensations in my head. Together with my mom, my grandmother, Austin, and his parents we spent 3 days in the capitol city of Santo Domingo before heading to the remote southwest region of the country to explore. The seven day ordeal was steeped in food, history, culture, and beauty both natural and not-so-much, but hanging over me the entire time was the nastiest, most miserable cold. 12 Days
Today is day 12 for me in the Dominican Republic, and in my head I’ve written at least that many blog posts. But between gloriously packed days and very limited internet access I’ve yet to actually put my thoughts to paper. I promise you single reader, they’re coming! In the meantime, enjoy these glimpses into my island paradise: Continue reading “12 Days”
Why I Love Colorado
Well single reader, after 10 months of consecutive work (the most I’ve worked in one year since graduating college!), I am home. My last day at Mesa Verde for the season was the tenth, I spent the eleventh packing and cleaning, the twelfth driving across the state of Colorado to visit with my brother in the front range, and the thirteenth on a plane to Florida. Yesterday I celebrated my 24th birthday. And today it’s finally starting to sink in that I am done. If I decide it’s what I want to do, I won’t have to work for six whole months. Aztec Ruins
The GRE is done! Horrah! I’m still waiting on the final scores but I can’t tell you what a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. So when it came time to decide what to do with myself this past weekend only one thought came to my mind: new. I want to go someplace new. Continue reading “Aztec Ruins”
10 Months and 6 Days Later
September 22, 2011, in some ways, was the biggest day of my life.
It was the day I got on a plane to Spain. Continue reading “10 Months and 6 Days Later”
Travel Bug
It was around this time last year that I bought my plane ticket to Spain. It’s been eight months since I’ve been back, and lately the Camino has been constantly on my mind. I’m missing it. How could I not? The experience was so incredible. But I know it can never be remade. Even if I walked the trail again, it wouldn’t be remotely the same experience. Continue reading “Travel Bug”
In Honor of Black History Month
I love my job. But it’s easy to feel discouraged, frustrated, and downright neglected from the powers that be and the community I strive to serve. Videos like this remind me how worthwhile it all is and make my heart happy. Watch it. By the end I bet it will make your heart happy too.
Misadventure
A few weeks ago a good friend came to town, and with him came a connection to a guy who owned a backcountry hut up by the continental divide. Once invited, A and I were psyched about the chance for an overnight adventure. There was only one problem: just days before I had finally seen a podiatrist about my still sore foot/ankle situation, and he had put me on a strict regime of advil, ice, and no unnecessary physical activity for the next week. The hut was only available for one night during the time our friend was in town, so we were faced with a decision: figure out a way to get me to that hut without ‘unnecessary physical activity,’ or skip it. Not one to back down from a challenge, the guys put there heads together and came up with a plan: people use sleds to haul gear into the backcountry all the time, why not use it for me? Hot Spring Therapy
As most of you know, I am currently in the midst of a battle with a particularly nasty bout of tendinitis. This puts me in a pretty tortuous position, living at what is pretty much considered the center of all-things outdoor recreation, and essentially, all things which I cannot partake in. But there is one activity quite common in the area that I have found quite suited to my current condition: the hot spring. Apparently, they are everywhere around here – a fact I did not know earlier this month when A and I made the 2 hour drive to Glennwood Springs, CO to stay in a fancy hotel and visit their famous hot springs.
