In Honor of Black History Month

I love my job. But it’s easy to feel discouraged, frustrated, and downright neglected from the powers that be and the community I strive to serve. Videos like this remind me how worthwhile it all is and make my heart happy. Watch it. By the end I bet it will make your heart happy too.

Misadventure

A few weeks ago a good friend came to town, and with him came a connection to a guy who owned a backcountry hut up by the continental divide. Once invited, A and I were psyched about the chance for an overnight adventure. There was only one problem: just days before I had finally seen a podiatrist about my still sore foot/ankle situation, and he had put me on a strict regime of advil, ice, and no unnecessary physical activity for the next week. The hut was only available for one night during the time our friend was in town, so we were faced with a decision: figure out a way to get me to that hut without ‘unnecessary physical activity,’ or skip it. Not one to back down from a challenge, the guys put there heads together and came up with a plan: people use sleds to haul gear into the backcountry all the time, why not use it for me? Hot Spring Therapy

As most of you know, I am currently in the midst of a battle with a particularly nasty bout of tendinitis. This puts me in a pretty tortuous position, living at what is pretty much considered the center of all-things outdoor recreation, and essentially, all things which I cannot partake in. But there is one activity quite common in the area that I have found quite suited to my current condition: the hot spring. Apparently, they are everywhere around here – a fact I did not know earlier this month when A and I made the 2 hour drive to Glennwood Springs, CO to stay in a fancy hotel and visit their famous hot springs. Fabulous Fall

Well single reader, I have been neglecting this blog pretty severely since my arrival in Santiago. A lot has happened since then – a mind boggling week in Madrid, a magical 4 days in Disney World, my 23rd birthday, a big fat Thanksgiving, lots of reunions, showing A and his family around Florida, and plenty of R&R for my poor pained feet.

Now I am back in Colorado and if the snow piling outside my window is any indication, fall is officially over.

It was such an amazing few months that I am having trouble organizing it all in my head. Maybe I’ll make an attempt at story-telling later, maybe not. But I have spent the last few snowed-in days creating my annual seasonal video.

So here it is, my best attempt at articulating my fabulous fall. Enjoy 🙂

Canyonlands Adventures

Alright, alright – I promised to make an attempt at updating on some of the things I’ve been up to since returning to Canyonlands, so here goes my best abbreviated attempt. Continue reading “Canyonlands Adventures”

San Juan River Adventure

8/13/11

A few weeks ago Austin’s mom ran into an old friend. This friend in particular happened to be spending his time these days as a guide on the San Juan River. Shortly after their meeting a commercial trip he was scheduled to work fell through. This family friend then had the idea to use the permit still reserved for the cancelled trip for him and a few friends. Having just recently reunited with my boyfriend’s mother, he decided to invite her and her husband along. They invited Austin and me. That is how this trip came to fruition. Moonlight Meadows

At 9am this past Monday morning (my Saturday, as my days off are Monday-Tuesday) I had an interview for a ski instructor position at Keystone. By 10, they had offered me the job.

That was the start of my amazing weekend. Continue reading “Moonlight Meadows”

Telluride, CO

I was first supposed to visit Telluride, Colorado sometime in July. Something came up however and my travel buddy couldn’t make it, so I rescheduled for the same weekend with a different crew, which ended up falling through as well. Since then I’ve been within hours of the place a multitude of times, often with the intention of at least a day visit, but some distraction has always come up and sent me in another direction. So a few weeks ago – almost a month ago actually, wow how time flies! – when a friend from home was up visiting, I decided to take the opportunity to show her the diversity of the area, and finally get my butt to Telluride. Baby Bro in Canyonlands

I’ve been telling people to come visit me since the moment I stepped foot in this place, more for their sake than mine, and last week in one day I got the news that I would soon have not one but two visitors – a good friend at the end of this month, and my baby brother this past weekend. Mesa Verde

My days off have been all over the place lately. Usually they are Sunday/Monday, but due to some seasonal staff rotation they’ve recently been changed to Monday/Tuesday. The past few weeks have been especially strange in addition to this change, as I gave up a day off for a 3-day weekend two weeks ago, and covered for a co-worker this last weekend, causing my days off to be Monday/Thursday.

So as I sat at breakfast Wednesday morning, I pondered out loud to my tablemate what I should do with my odd day off.

“Want to go to Colorado?” he said.

“Sure, let’s go to Mesa Verde.” Continue reading “Mesa Verde”
